FJSA Announces Newest Inductees into Hall of Honor

Save the date for the Texas A&M FJSA Hall of Honor induction ceremony to be held on campus on Friday, Feb. 27, 2026.

Exact times have not yet been determined, but prior to the induction ceremony honorees Richard Oliver and Fernando Palomo will engage with journalism students and take part in a panel discussion.


Felix McKnight ’ 32 (posthumous)

When he died in 2004 at age 93, his obituary in the Dallas Morning News referred to McKnight as one of the 20th century’s most respected and distinguished newspapermen. He began his career in journalism in 1928 at the San Antonio Light as a sports writer. He joined the Associated Press as a sports writer in 1933, and later became state editor and acting bureau chief. In 1937 he and AP colleague William T. Rives covered the New London School disaster that killed 301. He spent 16 years at The Dallas Morning News, rising to the title of executive editor. He joined the Dallas Times Herald in 1957, where he served as executive editor, editor and co-publisher, and then vice chairman of the board. He was one of 10 U.S. newspaper editors to tour the Soviet Union in 1962 and interview Premier Nikita Khrushchev. He directed and wrote most of the coverage on the day President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963. He finished out his distinguished career in 1988 when he retired from the Times Herald.

Richard Oliver '81

Oliver has served as communications manager of the San Antonio Convention & Sports Facilities since May 2022. He was recently inducted in the media category for the inaugural class of the Texas Boxing Hall of Fame. Oliver is a former sports editor at the Corpus Christi Caller-Times (1986-96) and San Antonio Express-News (2001-03) as well as senior writer with the Express-News (2003-13). Oliver has extensive radio and TV broadcast experience, working alongside current A&M play-by-play voice Andrew Monaco for 12 years with the broadcast crew for the San Antonio Spurs. He also served as director of communications at Visit San Antonio (2013-2016), director of partner and community relations at Visit San Antonio (October 2016-May 2022). He was The Battalion sports editor for summer/fall 1980 and spring 1981.

Fernando Palomo '95

A track & field athlete in the javelin at A&M, Palomo began his career in newspapers and local TV in his native El Salvador, then ESPN Deportes, and eventually anchoring the Spanish version of Sportscenter. He is now the leading soccer commentator for ESPN’s Spanish-language channel and host of the network’s premier show on international soccer. Palomo is ESPN’s English-language commentator for Mexico’s national soccer team, and covers many of the world’s most prestigious soccer tournaments, including the World Cup. He is one of the voices of the FIFA video game franchise.
